This is one of the most important English Language qualifications which is accepted worldwide. When at IGCSE level you will feel confidence with all four skills; reading, writing, listening and speaking. You will clearly be able to tackle a variety of types of text and demonstrate efficient use of the English Language. Writing will be easy for you and you will be able to communicate what you want effortlessly through a variety of text types. This level will allow you to fully understand different types of spoken materials and you will be able to communicate in any situation without any misunderstandings.

If you reach proficiency level in the English Language then you should be really proud of yourself. At this level you will not have difficulty distinguishing fiction and non – fiction and you will have the ability to understand any book you choose to read, online articles, newspapers and magazines. Your language command will be of a level that will allow you to complete any type of writing like essays, letters, emails, reports and reviews. You will be able to understand spoken language in both formal and informal situations. Your enriched vocabulary and excellent grammar command will allow you to communicate effectively in any situation.

When reaching an Advanced level it is a proof that you can understand texts from a variety of sources such as books, newspapers and magazines. You will be able to use a varied vocabulary and your grammar and syntax will be of a very good level. Moreover you will be able to write essays, reports, stories letters and emails with no difficulty. It will be easy for you to understand spoken language and have everyday conversations. You will have the ability to communicate in familiar situations and express yourself appropriately.

This is the second stage of the bridging levels and the candidates are required to write a piece of connected text on descriptive, narrative or imaginary topics. Further progression from the Elementary level is found within the need to deal with present, past or future events and be able to show an understanding of subject matters such as hypothesis, purpose, obligation and advice.
The student has sufficient active vocabulary and structural understanding to
•    write a short connected text on descriptive, narrative or imaginary topics
•    read and understand a text from a familiar range of topics
•    distinguish between and use a variety of tenses: past, present and future
•    ask and answer questions about past or present or future events
•    express basic intention, purpose, obligation, preference, advice, agreement and disagreement, hypothesis and process

This is the first stage designed to act as a bridging step upwards towards the top three levels. As part of the upper level suite, Elementary requires the candidate to write for the first time, a short piece of text on a given topic. They must also be able to read and understand a set text and be able to distinguish between the various tenses, using them properly within the examination answers. The student has sufficient active vocabulary and structural understanding to write a short connected text on descriptive or narrative topics read and understand a text from a familiar range of topics ask and answer questions about past or present events distinguish between and use a variety of tenses in familiar contexts: past, present and future express basic intention, purpose, obligation, preference and advice.

When you take a Preliminary level exam you show us that you now know even more words, for example you know two words for some things and you know words and their opposites.

You can also show that your grammar is expanding and with your words and grammar you can read in English, answer comprehension questions from reading and listening, write whole sentences and answer real questions about yourself.

With this certificate you show everyone that your English is really taking off and that you are ready to move up and away from the younger learner levels and into the intermediate levels of English.

The student

has a basic active vocabulary of about 400 words
can communicate present and past events, recently completed actions and life experiences
can communicate where things are and when things happen
can express opposites, comparisons and ownership
can ask questions, answer questions, and write full sentences

When you take a Primary level exam you can show us that you have learned more words and can now do useful things like tell the time in English and read an English postcard from a friend.

At this level, you can also show us that you are good at getting some things exactly right, like making plural words and forming simple questions.

Your Primary level certificate means you understand lots of important things about English, and that you are beginning to use your English to communicate with.

The student

  • has a basic active vocabulary of about 300 words
  • can tell the time
  • can describe present actions, give personal and family information, describe habits, routines, and everyday activities
  • can communicate when and how often an action or event takes place
  • can form questions and negatives

When you take this level exams you can show us that you know some of the important words in English, for example words like Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and mother, father, sister and brother.

You can also show us that you can do things in English like answer questions, count, and use the right colours when you are asked. You can even show us that the teacher can tell you to do things in English and you will understand.

When you get your First Step certificate it shows everyone that you have made a really good first step in learning English and are on your way.

The student

  • has a basic vocabulary recognition of about 100 words
  • can read and follow simple instructions
  • can understand the language of basic identification.
